Being aware of the preferences of the Portuguese, or the lack thereof, in relation to national authors and artists, can be an important tool for assessing the health of the country's culture.
In the "Cultural References" section of the Barometer Gerador Qmetrics 2021, we analyzed which actors, musical artists, visual artists, writers, directors and comedians the Portuguese admire the most. Today, we tell you what the results were in the field of music.
The question posed to respondents was open-ended, asking them to name the Portuguese musical artist or band they admire most. Xutos e Pontapés won, remaining in first place in the top 10 since 2019, although today they have about half the mentions compared to that year.
Carolina Deslandes and Fernando Daniel entered the top 10 in 2021, a year in which António Zambujo, Pedro Abrunhosa, and Carlos do Carmo were not among the top 10.
We can also observe that there seems to be a link between musicians who are regularly featured on television talent shows and their ranking in this list , reinforcing the importance of notoriety.

Looking in detail at two age groups, the youngest and the oldest, we can observe some interesting differences.
Despite Diogo Piçarra's leadership among younger audiences, there is a significant presence of Hip Hop artists, reinforcing the results of another issue previously analyzed , which demonstrates a clear growth in the popularity of Hip Hop, particularly among younger people, but not exclusively.
It is also worth noting that Xutos e Pontapés and Rui Veloso continue to be listened to by younger people. Among older people, there is a clear presence of fado that does not exist in the other age group analyzed here.

Every two weeks we dive into the Barometer Gerador Qmetrics to bring you new analyses on the relationship between Portuguese people and culture. Stay tuned for upcoming articles!
