In this 15-hour course led by Maria João Garcia, producer and association leader, you will learn how to create a collective entity with legal personality (association), with the aim of developing artistic and cultural initiatives. You will also learn about the practical formalities related to its maintenance, as well as the resulting tax and social security issues. This course is aimed at members of cultural associations or people who wish to join, create and/or manage an association, as well as those interested in the subject.

• Recognize general notions about Associations and their importance in the development of collective artistic and cultural practices;
• Use the Instant Association service to create an Association;
• Use Statutes, Internal Regulations and Minutes Templates;
• Design the Activity Plan and build the annual Budget, as well as prepare Activity and Account Reports;
• Identify general obligations of Taxation and the relationship with Social Security.


Brief presentation. Understand how civil society is organized collectively around common interests and objectives (historical perspective of associations). What the Portuguese Constitution and the Civil Code say. Recognize requirements and mechanisms for creating a cultural association.

Statutes and internal regulations of the association. Examples related to meetings (invitations, attendance lists, votes) and their minutes. Minutes books (opening and closing terms).

Define the annual Activity Plan and Budget. Prepare activity and accounting reports, obtain the opinion of the Supervisory Board and approval of the balance sheet at the General Assembly.

Other issues for associations, such as registration in the Central Registry of Legal Entities and the Central Registry of Beneficial Owners. Summary.

With the help of a Certified Accountant, questions are addressed and doubts regarding registration, activity codes, reporting obligations, taxation regimes, invoicing, tax exemptions and benefits, invoicing programs, etc. are clarified.

Topics such as the hiring of workers are covered, covering the specificities for professionals in the cultural sector defined in the EPAC (Statute of Professionals in the Cultural Sector), contributions, as well as the posting of workers abroad.
She was a dancer at the Almada Dance Company (1990-98), maintaining regular activity as a performer until the mid-2000s. Since 1995, she has created dance/theatre/performance shows.
She was a consultant at CIMAC – Comunidade Intermunicipal do Alentejo Central for the development and maintenance of the “Transforma-te” portal, an information and documentation center for professionals and cultural agents.
