The course aims to provide motivation, knowledge and the ability to identify funding opportunities for artistic projects by facilitating access to information and knowledge about potential national funding instruments. It also aims to equip participants with the tools that will enable them to implement fundraising strategies and thus co-finance projects, providing sustainability to organizations.
The course is aimed at people or projects in performing arts (contemporary circus and street arts, dance, music and theater), visual arts (architecture, plastic arts, design, photography and new media) and cross-disciplinary projects.

• Be able to identify and interpret the various institutional support programs at a national level that can potentially finance projects in the field of Arts and Culture, with emphasis on the performing arts (contemporary circus and street arts, dance, music and theater), visual arts (architecture, plastic arts, design, photography and new media) and disciplinary crossover;
• Plan and outline applications for funding for artistic structures and projects;
• Recognize the usefulness of financial management and financing in the context of cultural activities;
• Correctly conduct funding requests for artistic projects;
• Being able to move from theory to practice, transforming an idea into a potential project to compete for national public/private funding.


Overview of the various national funding instruments and their regulations. Which support programmes and national entities can fund projects in the field of arts and culture. Map of designations and terms that will accompany us throughout the following classes. Brief presentation of the participants.

Presentation of the current Arts Support Model/Dgartes. What annual and multi-annual support programs exist and what artistic areas receive support. Learn about the reference documents and the application notice system.

Annual support – Support Programs for Projects for Creation, Programming, National Circulation and Internationalization for individuals or legal entities. What are the requirements? Where to look for information, how to prepare and submit the application? Competitive procedure. Registration on the DGArtes Platform.

Multi-annual Support – Sustained Support Programs for cultural sector structures. What are the requirements? Where to look for information, how to prepare and submit the application? Competitive procedure.

Identification and good interpretation of various support programs, namely from the GDA Foundation and Municipal Councils, with emphasis on the municipalities of Lisbon and Porto.

Identification and good interpretation of several support programs of the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation, with emphasis on the Gulbenkian Culture Program and PARTIS & Art For Change. Examples of national and international funding search engines.

Transforming an idea into a project. The project objectives and program priorities. The need to align and adapt the idea to the funding instrument. What are the fundamental steps: budget, teams, actions and activities, project management and communication. Distribution of working groups.

How to establish the right partnerships? How to account for in-kind support? How to find inspiration in examples and good practices. Start filling out the application form (texts), using the DGArtes Support Program application form as a basis. Continuation of the working groups.

This course has a strong practical component, in order to enable students to develop a concrete idea and transform it into a project that is potentially a candidate for Institutional Support Programs. Throughout the classes, you will work on ideas, dedicating this class to their presentation, through pitching and sharing (result of group work). Conclusion of the training.
Magda Bull (1977) is a manager, cultural producer and trainer.
Graduated in Contemporary Dance Production and Management (Fórum Dança, 2001) and Creative Production in Television (Universidade Independente, 2004). Over the last two decades, she has worked with several independent artists and national structures of creation, production and programming of dance, theatre, cross-disciplinary, visual and audiovisual arts. Throughout her professional experience, she has had the opportunity to work with different public and private funding programs. She collaborated, as a specialized technician, with the Directorate-General for the Arts (2017-2018) within the scope of the new model of support for the arts/sustained support program.
She was cultural manager at Companhia Olga Roriz (2018–2023), and also took on the management and production of the Corpoemcadeia project, within the scope of the PARTIS initiative of the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation (2019–2022). More recently, in the area of visual arts, she was project manager at Hangar – Centro de Investigação Artística (2023–2024) and responsible for the management of the Greenhouse project, Portuguese representation at the 60th Venice Art Biennale (2024).
In the area of consultancy and mentoring, it provides support and monitoring to various national cultural structures.
He is responsible for the Financing of Cultural Structures and Projects course at Academia Gerador, since 2020 (with 9 complete editions).

Classes are held via video conference, in real time, and are recorded for consultation, remaining available up to a week after the last class. Sharing experiences between trainers and students is the main focus of Academia Gerador, thus valuing participatory learning adapted to each case.
