Introduction to video – filming, cutting and editing

How do you prepare, film, edit, and post-produce a video project?

 

In this 15-hour course led by João Cruz, photographer and videographer, you will learn about all the necessary stages to produce your own video independently. Through theoretical foundations and practical exercises, you will become familiar with several essential tools to efficiently realize your projects. In the editing and post-production classes, we will explore the free software DaVinci Resolve, which will give you the basics to edit your video.

What are the objectives of this course?

• Apply the basic principles of video and know how to operate a video camera;

• Understanding and using composition techniques and camera movements;

• Understand and utilize the pre-production process;

• Learn how to conduct an interview;

• Learn how to structure a narrative and a script for video;

• Learn how to use DaVinci Resolve software to apply video and audio editing and post-production techniques;

• Develop a video project.

Lesson 1 | Introduction and Basic Principles of Video

Presentation by João Cruz; Participant introductions; Introduction and presentation of the learning program; Brief history of video; Exposure; Aperture; Depth of field; Shutter speed; Sensor sensitivity, ISO; Color temperature; White balance; Frame rate, frames per second; Types of lenses; Focal length; Types of focusing; Types of cameras; Video resolutions; Camera operation in video mode; Proposed Practical Exercise I; Presentation on the Final Project.

Lesson 2 | Composition, Framing, Editing, and Narrative

Types of shots; 30º and 180º rule; Types of framing and composition; Camera movements; Frame, shot, scene, sequence; Narrative structure; Editing techniques, types of cuts and transitions; Visualization and commentary Practical Exercise I; Proposed Practical Exercise II.

Lesson 3 | Audio, Accessories and Formats

Basic audio recording and monitoring; Accessories: ND filters, lens hood; Supports: tripod and monopod; Recording formats and profiles; Reference filmmakers and videographers; Pre-production (Location scouting, Storyboard and script); Viewing and comments; Practical Exercise II; Support for Final Projects.

Lesson 4 | Editing and Assembly

File management and organization; Introduction to DaVinci Resolve: workspace, menus, tools, assembly; Practical exercises in DaVinci Resolve; Support for final projects.

Lesson 5 | Post-production and Color Correction

Post-production and effects; Basic audio post-production; Color adjustments and correction; Graphics insertion; Export; Support for final projects.

Lesson 6 | Presentation of Final Projects

Presentation and discussion of Final Projects; Adaptation of Final Projects for various platforms and vertical format; Visual culture: influential filmmakers; Q&A; Informal conversation about content and any topic.

 

The trainer

João Cruz is a photographer and videographer from Porto.

Currently, he is a freelancer and works with a wide range of clients, including companies and individuals with personal brands.

What are the class dates?

The course will take place at Tuesday from 19pm to 21:30pm. Class days are:

September 15, 22, 29
October 6th, 13th and 20th

Where do the classes take place?

Classes are held via video conference, in real time, and are recorded for consultation, remaining available up to a week after the last class.The sharing of experiences between trainers and students is the main focus of the Gerador Academy, thus valuing participatory learning adapted to each case.
