Maria João Valente Rosa was born in Lisbon in 1961. She holds a PhD in Sociology (specializing in Demography) from the Faculty of Social Sciences and Humanities of the Universidade Nova de Lisboa, where she is a professor. She is the author and co-author of several articles and books on contemporary Portuguese society, particularly on demographic aging. She has participated in numerous national and international conferences and has been responsible for the scientific coordination of conferences and other initiatives in the area of Demography. She has held several public positions in the Ministries of Education and Science, and directed the project by date from 2009 to 2019. She is a member of the Higher Council of Statistics (CSE), is vice-president of the European Statistical Advisory Committee (ESAC) and is a researcher at the Portuguese Institute of International Relations (IPRI).
