A Moth It is a showcase of films from family archives, promoted since 2015 by the Lisbon Municipal Archive – Video Library and organized in 2023 by Gerador, which seeks to raise awareness and encourage the viewing and study of films from family archives, previously limited to private viewing and use.
Every year it has a different format, and also takes place in a different location, adapting to the neighborhood that hosts it.
In 2023, the Moth will fly to Bairro do Rego, between the 13th and 15th of October.

Free admission

Accustomed to welcoming people since its foundation, Bairro do Rego, right in the center of Lisbon, has always known how to warmly open its arms to those who arrived and be generous in farewells.
It was created to welcome the workers who built the Hospital de Santa Maria, then received a wave of migrants from the interior of the country, took the lead in the integration of social housing, in the 70s it housed Brazilian students who formed the country's first samba school and, today, it is one of the places chosen by university students who come to Lisbon.
Therefore, this year's Traça is a narrative about hospitality, told by the spaces and protagonists of this neighborhood and by creators from different artistic areas, to whom we open the archive of family films from the Videoteca de Lisboa, specifically those dedicated to family gatherings, so that, from these, new artistic objects can emerge.
The programme organised in the 6 events below celebrates the art of hospitality with music, cinema, gastronomy, public interaction performances, talks and workshops, in different spaces near Rua da Beneficência, the central artery of the neighbourhood and Traça. Find out in detail the programme, the initiatives and the protagonists who will be part of this essay on hospitality.

Remember here how Traça 2023 was

Traça warmly opens its arms to the public, every day, with an unprecedented performance on the street.

possessed – moth2023

Founded in 2013 by Catarina Rôlo Salgueiro, João Pedro Mamede and Nuno Gonçalo Rodrigues, Os Possessos are an artistic collective that brings together people from different areas (theatre, cinema, music, science and literature).
They work on theatrical and performance projects, based on universal narratives and the creation of a common fiction about reality between artists and the public, with an emphasis on contemporary dramaturgy, collective creations and self-authored works.
They currently have five members: Catarina Rôlo Salgueiro, Isabel Costa, João Pedro Mamede, Leonardo Garibaldi and Leonor Buescu.

As part of the Manifesta Project, which aims to research, translate and present manifestos written after 2000, two manifestos will be read in an intimate manner to a small group of spectators. They are words that speak of today's world, of everyday life, messages of hope or denunciation, in a project directed by Isabel Costa, with the interpretation of Catarina Rôlo Salgueiro and João Pedro Mamede.

Traça creates the ideal atmosphere for everyone to feel at home in Bairro do Rego, with artistic installations created from the family film archive of the Videoteca de Lisboa.

A short film about the Ezequiel family by Matilde Calado

13 to 15 Oct | Avenidas, a Theater in every Neighborhood

A video performance created from films of Portuguese families at birthdays, weddings and gatherings. Carlos Tavares Pedro manipulates these images, provided by the Lisbon Municipal Archive, to emphasize the emotions and dances in the videos.

The images will be projected onto the screen, creating a calm and welcoming live sound.

At the same time, through dance, Ale D'Afrique interacts with music. The author wants to show the importance of these two universal phenomena, dance and music, which can temporarily welcome several people in a single space.

After the performance, the author's improvisation remains, what remains of the performance, an installation that will be as unique and different as the performance of the day that precedes it.

Performance – October 13th and 14th
Installation – October 14th and 15th

In the experience of being welcomed, the feeling of well-being arises when we feel included. In addition to sensory comfort, seeing and being seen by others is essential for recognition and inclusion.

Based on these principles, this installation aims to create a cross-border dialogue between the spaces that welcome us through our shared experience, and those that individualize us.

What will Europe be like in the future? And how do we see Europe now? An area, next to the installation “Ser Lugar” by Colectivo Warehouse, that helps us reflect on this cross-border and abstract place that is Europe.

The Ezequiel Family, residents of Bairro do Rego, recorded their experiences, moments of conviviality, celebration and profession of faith on video, using a camera provided by the Traça organization.

This raw and honest record will be presented, edited and assembled into a short film.

Artistic installation that the musician created for this year's edition. Using the family film archive of the Lisbon Video Library, and sounds taken from a selection of these films, Noiserv created unique musical compositions.

These are new soundtracks, from a reality imagined by the artist, which accompany stills from the films and which you will be able to see and hear.

The Memórias de Lisboa Programme aims to collect, preserve, map and disseminate the memories of the territories through the active participation of local communities using oral history methodology. With this approach, in addition to gathering primary sources of historical information, it aims to combat the isolation of the elderly population, create bridges between generations and contribute to strengthening local identity and social cohesion.

In this context, seven interviews were conducted with residents of Bairro do Rego, which you can see in three local commercial spaces.

The Garden of Life celebrates the connection we establish with ourselves without ever losing sight of the importance of reciprocity. Thus, this exhibition is the result of the small gardens from the Crescer Novo no Antigo workshops, by Elisabete Vila Viçosa, emphasizing an exercise in pruning and pruning individual and collective emotional branches.

An act of caring, of reflection, of what is deciduous or perennial, of growth, to improve flowering, of restoration, but also of beginning, which deserves to be shared.

cinema rock rendez vouz – trace2023

Documentary and Conversation with the presence of director Ricardo Espírito Santo and historical figures from the space
The main Portuguese rock club was the symbolic place of all the cultural changes that transformed and urbanized Portuguese society. The advent of Portuguese rock, the changes in behavior, new fashions and cultural changes can be recounted from the nights of Rock Rendez Vous. Just as the trumpets of Jericho brought down the biblical walls, the chords of rock broke down social barriers in Portugal and signaled the advent of a young society in a country that, due to the dictatorship, had not experienced the great cultural and social upheavals of the 60s and 70s.
This documentary recovers a set of images, in the possession of individuals and institutions, that will take us on a journey through the decade that the Portuguese rock factory was open. In the succession of these days of music, over 60 minutes, we show the great cultural, social and political changes that Rock Rendez-Vous helped to produce. Zé Pedro from Xutos, Rui Pregal da Cunha (Heróis do Mar), Rui Veloso, Rui Reininho, Xana from Rádio Macau, Adolfo Luxúria Canibal, António Manuel Ribeiro (UHF), Miguel Cadete (director of Blitz), Edgar Pêra, João Peste, Cristina, António Sérgio's wife, Rui Vasco (photographer), music critics and many others, star in the history of the most celebrated concert hall in the country.

Bringing, in a poetic way, teachings from the ancestors and the warmth of Morabeza (the Art of Welcoming), the poet creates a bridge between Cape Verde, Bairro Do Rego and the wisdom of life. cinema atlas – trace2023

Documentary by Inês Sapeta Dias and Luísa Homem. 2023, 33': assembled from the Videoteca's family film archive
Until the 90s, there were few archives that collected amateur cinema and family films, and it was only very recently that the first archives dedicated exclusively to safeguarding these films were created. This first cartography introduces this blind spot in the history of cinema. It introduces the terms of this ATLAS, starting with the “amateur” and the way it contrasts with the official, and with correct and regularized images – without neglecting to look at the ways in which this cinema is influenced by these; but also the “atlas” itself as a mechanism for articulating images, a visual machine that, through editing, allows us to see what is absent. Over the course of four meetings, we discuss the stabilization of official imagery and what is left out of it. We also seek to understand how the selection and arrangement of archives influence the history that is written and what other possible stories are yet to be told. It is a cartography of exclusion.

cinema Home, Revised – trace2023

While trying to make a film that makes sense of home movies from her home country, Portugal, a budding filmmaker talks to other filmmakers in the hope of understanding what it takes to make movies from archival footage. The result: a journey through the iconography of private life in a country caught between dictatorship and democracy, and a reflection on the power and responsibility of filmmakers who build their stories from the stories of others.

presentation “Amateurs in Lisbon” and “Déjà-vu” – trace2023

Amateurs in Lisbon and Dejá-Vu are two prototypes of interactive web documentaries in that they allow the user to navigate between the contents.
Both question how amateur and homemade films convey the feeling of missing something or someone, Saudade. This is understood both as a feeling of loss and absence, and as an impulse to reconstruct fragments of past lives, in order to give meaning to the present and chart future paths.
They are based on films made in 1975, in Lisbon, by Mr. José António Correia País, born in Verdelhos in 1953 and deceased in 2014. A banker by profession, Mr. José António also cultivated his poetic and journalistic vocation and enjoyed photography and cinema. But while Amateurs in Lisbon focuses on the multiple layers and stories that can emerge from the history of the collection and intertwine within the scope of the Traça project of the Municipal Archive Videoteca de Lisboa, Déjà-vu focuses more on the possibilities of recombining the found material and the polyphony of inner voices that emerge.
Reminiscences and coincidences punctuate the rhythm of time, as we ask ourselves: what is worth remembering and living?

Musician Sílvio Rosado and documentary filmmaker Tiago Pereira create audiovisual performances based on recordings of musical practices or sound environments from a given location.

On the one hand, they build a living archive of local identity sound documents that can be consulted, keeping memories alive, and on the other hand, they promote the deconstruction of this same archive and memory, allowing the community to review and question itself, while at the same time being able to dance to memory or follow a story. In this concert, they start and work on the archive of family films from the Lisbon Video Library.

Created in mid-2005 by musician David Santos, noiserv is considered one of the most creative and stimulating musical projects in Portugal in the last decade.

The “one-man orchestra” or “one-man band” has four albums and two EPs. The album “One Hundred Miles from Thoughtlessness” [2008], the EP “A Day in the Day of the Days” [2010] and “Almost Visible Orchestra” [2013], distinguished as the best album of the year by SPA, were the first three recordings.

In 2014, he released his first live recording, a DVD entitled “Everything should be perfect even if no one's there”.

With over 4 concerts in Portugal and the rest of the world, as well as collaborations in Theatre and Cinema, in 2015 the most serious internationalization took place with the re-release of the album “Almost Visible Orchestra” through the French label Naive, the mother house of M83, Yann Tiersen, among others.

2016 is the year for another release, 00:00:00:00, an intimate reflection on the piano. In 2018 he composed the original music for the new image of RTP1, and finished the soundtrack for the documentary “Labirinto da Saudade”, distinguished as best documentary at the Sophia Awards.

More than a show, an experience. Those who visit Bairro do Rego will relive its history, encountering references to their daily lives and paying homage to the place that welcomed them.

For those who are not familiar with this area, you will be able to taste the welcoming atmosphere, characteristic of the neighborhood, that many have already felt and still feel.
