As part of the reconversion of the Northern Military Maintenance, which aims to rehabilitate this unoccupied public heritage site for new uses such as affordable housing, student accommodation, temporary accommodation for people in vulnerable situations and various spaces for cultural creation and enjoyment, the Project Group for World Youth Day 2023 has been developing, since January 2024, technical studies to make use of the 7 hectares and 15 buildings existing in the space.
On 23 and 24 November, between 11am and 17pm, you can visit this unique space in Beato (Rua do Grilo, nº 84), in Lisbon, and also two temporary exhibitions dedicated to photography and illustration. The initiative follows the request of several associations and collectives of artists looking for spaces in Lisbon and who expressed their interest in getting to know this heritage.
The photography collective NARRATIVA has been showcasing the work of national and international artists, both established and emerging, with the aim of contributing to the appreciation of photography as a form of expression and communication. The exhibition they have prepared for this initiative includes works dedicated to contemporary themes, distinguished with awards such as World Press Photo, Sociedade Portuguesa de Autores, Picture Of The Year, Novos Talentos FNAC, Estação Imagem, PhMuseum and PHotoESPAÑA.
The exhibition “O Boneco”, dedicated to illustrations created in Portugal, highlights 106 works that reveal the provocative power of illustration, comics and cartoons. On both days, guided tours of the exhibitions are available at 12:00.
